How the Mapviewer Works
The OwlsheadGPS Mapviewer utilizes the Carto user interface in which to display the Project’s route data.
• Using the Mapviewer you can zoom in and out, and move and scroll across the map.
• If you wish to reset the map and return it to the default view, click the “Reset Map” link in left side menu.
The Mapviewer is locked to limit your ability to scroll beyond the current OwlsheadGPS Project Area. As the Project Area expands, so will our lock on the MapViewer’s boundary.
Click directly on a route and the Mapviewer will highlight the selected trail in blue, and open a side panel where more information about that route is displayed. Links to download an individual route file to your computer in either the GPX or KML format are available from this side panel.
Viewing OHV Route Maps
Click and drag to navigate to the area you wish to view. Click on a route to highlight the trail in blue.
A small popup window will appear that displays information about that route, including the route number, the agency that manages the route, and an indicator for full-size and motorcycle routes. There are also links to download a data file for the route in either the GPX or KML format.
You can also go directly to map coordinates and OHV routes by using the Search tool.
Searching for Locations
You can search for locations within the Mapviewer by using a city or town name, or though Degree Decimal (DD) coordinates.
ex. 35.6225 -117.6699
Click here for a handy online coordinate converter.
• The Mapviewer location search supports coordinates in the WGS84 map datum.
• The Mapviewer does not support the UTM or other coordinate systems.
• The MapViewer supports placename search. You can use the Carto website to perform placename searches and obtain their coordinates for use with the Mapviewer.
Printing OHV Route Maps
Simply use the print features of your computer and printer to print OHV route maps from your browser. Consider printing to PDF files for your mobile device for times when you do not have internet access.
Additional Features
The Mapviewer allows you to switch between ten different basemaps to customize your view.
The masking feature allows you to hide routes from outside of a selected area. Choose a selection mode to draw your mask, then click to select your area. Double-click to complete your selection or press Esc to remove your selection.
The measuring feature allows you to get a quick distance of a given length. Click once to start a measurement, and click again to complete a segment. When done making segments, double click or press Esc to stop measuring.
